BreakAway Health Corporation
Executive Director, CEO, Owner

In 1999, Richard bought BreakAway Health – he has been with BreakAway for over 24 years, working his way through every level of its care system. There are few other stories of people in the behavioral health field that have displayed such dedication to help and guide children and their families to have a better quality of life. Richard’s personal ethics and devotion to his work is a testament to the thousands of families BreakAway Health has served over the years and we are proud that our counsellors and staff follow the same principles as Richard by helping our clients and their families bridge the gap of communication, heal wounds and find their own inner truths. BreakAway Health Corporation programs are designed with the whole family in mind. Where addiction is present in a family, it can and will destroy relationships. Our hope and wish is that we can help by giving you the guidance and direction to lovingly heal family wounds and broken relationships

Health Professional

I bring my experience as a Behavioral Health Nurse, an educator, and personal experience of having family treated for addiction. Having a mother who still currently suffers with the vicious cycle of recovery and relapse, I understand the importance of maintaining a level of support during and continuing in the long term of recovery. I carry a Masters in Nursing and Bachelors in Child and Adolescent Development. I have a passion and dedication for working with adults and adolescent clients suffering from substance abuse and other co-occurring disorders. My dedication is demonstrated when assessing clients, speaking with them individually, and during group.

Primary Case Manager

I have a passion for motivating and advising people. Getting families to see it is not where they have been that matters but where they can go from here. The wreckage of their past is nothing compared to what their future can hold. My desire is to take fractured families and help make them whole again in a safe environment with the best possible care; based on personal, professional, and educational experiences. “The biggest room anywhere is the room for improvement.” -Anonymous

I have been in recovery since 1998. I came to BreakAway in 2008 as an intern after graduating with honors in Addiction Studies. I received my CAADAC certificate in 2009. At BreakAway I found my home. Working with adolescents has been the most challenging and rewarding thing I have ever experienced. With love and compassion, I am known as the “great encourager.” My position, as the morning counselor, is to provide a safe, challenging, and fun environment that are conducive for growth. It’s so amazing to me, to see the light turn on and a smile reappear on a child’s face. Here at BreakAway I spend a lot of time teaching our kids how to enjoy life on life’s terms.

Peer Counselor

I attended BreakAway when I was 17, and excelled due to the effort from the staff and myself. When I graduated from the program I had the dream of one day returning to do work as a counselor. BreakAway gave me a chance to become who I am today, and my goal is to give that chance to the clients here.

Adolescent Clinical Program Director

The disease of addiction has profoundly affected my life. That being said, it has become my life’s passion to help those that suffer from this disease to live happy and successful lives. I love working with adolescents as I see them as our future and believe in their endless capabilities. I graduated from California State University, Fullerton with my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2007 at that time I did my first internship at BreakAway. From there I went on to get my Masters of Science in Counseling at California State University, Fullerton. I knew that I wanted to start my career as a therapist at BreakAway because I believed in their program and knew they shared my passion. That was in 2011 and I continue to love every minute of my journey here at BreakAway.

I began working in the treatment arena in 1995 and am currently an Associate Clinical Social Worker. My experience includes numerous treatment practices including psychodynamic therapy, behavior modification and therapeutic community settings, social model treatment, educational & prevention models, and administrative social work and advocacy. I earned my Bachelor's in Science in Human Services in 1999 from California State University at Fullerton and my Masters Degree in Social Work in 2008 from California State University at Long Beach. My work has afforded me the opportunities of working with all age ranges and various specialized populations, including over 15 years servicing adolescents and young adults with their personal identity and development processes. I specialize in substance abuse, co-occurring disorders, and gender responsive trauma-informed practice.

Adult Program Coordinator

I started working in the field of recovery over ten years ago when I began to work in an inpatient setting to help equip transitioning adults with sober living, anger management, and life skills. Seven years ago, when I transitioned into working in a nonprofit setting, I discovered a passion for working with adolescents struggling with addiction and soon discovered an equally abiding love for working with families in recovery. After my first year as part of the BreakAway family, I began to so case management work for both adolescents and adults, and have since taken on the role of Adult Program Coordinator. To this day my excitement in working with adolescents has only grown with experience and in conjunction so has my interest in anger management, family communication, and life skills. I am a Certified Anger Management Professional Trainer, a Certified National Life Coach, and a Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor.

“I believe all things, recovery included, are richer with humor, warmth, and tremendous enthusiasm.”

Care Coordinator

I have been working in the field of recovery since 2014, however, my journey through recovery began in 2006 when I came to BreakAway myself at the age of 17 for treatment. Since that time it has been a passion of mine to work with others sharing the hope and healing that I had found for myself. I have been following my passion through school and currently hold a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services. I am also presently pursuing my Master's Degree in Counseling. I am so blessed to have the honor to work in the field with such an incredible population while I continue my education.
